Direct Hair Implantation (DHI): Understanding the Basics
Hair loss can affect confidence at any age, and modern hair transplant techniques move your own healthy follicles to areas of thinning.
DHI is one of the main techniques used today.
Lewis Medix does not provide medical care or perform procedures. We connect you with carefully vetted, accredited medical providers who offer direct hair implantation (DHI). Lewis Medix will support you with the coordination surrounding your care, including consultations, travel, accommodations, 24/7 onsite support, and recovery planning.
Our role is to help make your journey feel clear, organized, and supported from your first questions through your return home.
What Is Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)?
Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) is a hair transplant technique in which individual follicles are extracted from a donor area, usually the back of the head, and implanted directly into the thinning area using a fine pen‑like implanter, often called a Choi pen.
Because each graft is loaded into the implanter and placed in one step, the surgeon can control the angle, depth, and direction of each hair, and the recipient area does not need to be prepared with channels in advance.
Who This May Be Right For
DHI may be right for people with pattern hair loss or thinning who have enough healthy hair in the donor area.
Your surgeon will assess the cause of your hair loss, your donor area, and your goals, and explain how many grafts may be needed and what result is realistic.
Understanding the Procedure
DHI is performed by a qualified hair restoration surgeon and team in an accredited clinic, usually under local anesthesia.
Follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area, then implanted directly into the recipient area with the implanter pen. A session can take most of a day, depending on the number of grafts.
Your surgeon will explain the plan, the expected result, potential risks, and recovery before you decide whether to proceed.
Recovery Overview
Redness, mild swelling, and small scabs are common in the first days. The clinic will give you washing and aftercare instructions, and most people return to normal activities within about a week.
Your Lewis Medix coordinator will plan your stay, follow up appointments, and travel home around the clinic’s instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is DHI different from FUE?
Both extract individual follicles. In FUE, channels are opened in the recipient area before the grafts are placed; in DHI, the grafts are implanted directly with a pen‑like tool, without pre‑made channels.
Will I need to shave my head?
The donor area is usually trimmed. DHI can sometimes be performed with less shaving of the recipient area. Your clinic will advise.
When will I see results?
Transplanted hairs commonly shed in the first weeks, with new growth starting after a few months. Final results usually take around 12 months.
