Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): Understanding the Basics

Hair loss can affect confidence at any age, and modern hair transplant techniques move your own healthy follicles to areas of thinning.

FUE is one of the main techniques used today.

Lewis Medix does not provide medical care or perform procedures. We connect you with carefully vetted, accredited medical providers who offer follicular unit extraction (FUE). Lewis Medix will support you with the coordination surrounding your care, including consultations, travel, accommodations, 24/7 onsite support, and recovery planning.

Our role is to help make your journey feel clear, organized, and supported from your first questions through your return home.

What Is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant technique in which individual follicular units are removed one by one from a donor area, usually the back and sides of the head, using a small circular punch.

Tiny channels are then created in the thinning area, and the grafts are placed into them. Because there is no strip incision, FUE leaves small dot scars that are generally hard to see once the hair grows.

Who This May Be Right For

FUE may be right for people with pattern hair loss or thinning who have enough healthy hair in the donor area.

Your surgeon will assess the cause of your hair loss, your donor area, and your goals, and explain how many grafts may be needed and what result is realistic.

Understanding the Procedure

FUE is performed by a qualified hair restoration surgeon and team in an accredited clinic, usually under local anesthesia.

Follicles are extracted from the donor area, recipient channels are opened following the planned hairline and density, and the grafts are placed. A session can take most of a day, depending on the number of grafts.

Your surgeon will explain the plan, the expected result, potential risks, and recovery before you decide whether to proceed.

Recovery Overview

Redness, mild swelling, and small scabs are common in the first days. The clinic will give you washing and aftercare instructions, and most people return to normal activities within about a week.

Your Lewis Medix coordinator will plan your stay, follow up appointments, and travel home around the clinic’s instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is FUE different from DHI?

Both extract individual follicles. In FUE, channels are opened in the recipient area first and the grafts are placed into them; in DHI, the grafts are implanted directly with a pen‑like tool.

Will there be scarring?

FUE leaves small dot scars in the donor area rather than a linear scar. They are generally hard to see once the hair grows.

When will I see results?

Transplanted hairs commonly shed in the first weeks, with new growth starting after a few months. Final results usually take around 12 months.
